Why Self-Care is Better for You Than Self-Discipline

Have you ever struggled with the self-discipline it takes to create the happiness and success you desire?

Why is that?

I have a theory about why self-discipline is so challenging and it’s related to the conditioning and beliefs we’ve developed as a culture around what the word “self-discipline” actually means.

Consider for a moment the following definition of the word “self-discipline”:

self-discipline – n. discipline and training of oneself, usually for improvement

Typically, the words “discipline” and “training” tend to be more masculine in nature, which means any action taken is going to require focus, attention, effort and maybe even some good old “hard work”. For some, it may also mean that it will feel more like something that “has” to be done (i.e. obligation) vs. something that “wants” to be done (i.e. desire).

When trying to create change in your life, do these qualities sound like a “joyful or fun” experience to you?

From a mindset perspective, not really.

So why is self-care better for you than self-discipline…?

In a nutshell, here’s why. First, consider now the definition of the word “self-care”:

self-care – n. care of the self without medical or other professional consultation

Don’t you agree that “care of the self” tends to sound more loving and nurturing in nature?

Of course it does!

And although there may still be self-discipline and effort involved in learning how to “care for yourself” on your own, consider how empowering it is to overcome obstacles that hold you back without the help from outside sources! Not only that, but “self-care” comes from a place of desire vs. obligation, which means the energy that drives your actions will be much more feminine in nature (i.e. loving, gentle, nurturing, and desiring).

So when it comes time to create change in your life would you rather create from a place of self-discipline or self-care? 🙂

For me, I’ve found that choosing “self-care” rituals to create what I desire in life feels like less effort, is far more enjoyable, and way more effective than creating actions based on “self-discipline”.

How to Cleanse Your Life With Forgiveness

Are you finding it difficult to create what you REALLY desire?

Is it difficult for you to let go of expectations for how things should look?

Do you sometimes find it difficult to truly forgive yourself & others?

If you answered yes, you may find it helpful to cleanse your life through the practice of FORGIVENESS.

How can cleansing & forgiveness help you create what you desire?

According to the Vacuum Law of Prosperity, it is stated that “nature abhors a void”.

Learning to let go of things, people and relationships that no longer serve you can be hard, but once you do it, it has the power to cleanse negativity from your life & opens you up to a flow of good that can come your way.

Forgiveness is a great way to practice the art of letting go but at times, it can be difficult to truly forgive our self & others!

To help you more readily find forgiveness, I’d like to share a self-care ritual that I’ve found to be personally helpful.

First, it’s important to note that forgiveness is more likely to happen when the following core values, qualities, or characteristics are in place:

DESIRE, CURIOSITY, CLARITY, WISDOM, GRATITUDE, COMPASSION, EMPATHY, ACCEPTANCE, NON-JUDGMENT

With these qualities in mind, there is a very simple forgiveness ritual that you can engage in (daily, weekly, or as needed) which is as follows:

  1. Identify the people (this could be yourself or someone else) & experiences in your life where lack of forgiveness is keeping you stuck & holding you back. Ask yourself the following questions:
    • What is it costing you not to forgive?
    • What are the benefits you’d receive if you could let go & move on?
    • What do you really want to experience?
    • What’s currently missing from that experience?
  2. Write a letter or empty out loud about how you feel about this situation (does NOT need to be in person) & then ask yourself the following questions:
    • What am I meant to learn from this experience that’s of positive benefit to me?
    • What core values, tools, or resources am I learning that will be of benefit to me going forward?
    • How can I actually be grateful for this experience as a tool for my growth & transformation?
  3. If another person is involved, imagine stepping into them (at a soul level) for a moment to experience what they were going through or feeling at the time & ask yourself the following questions:
    • What were they feeling & experiencing at the time that might’ve driven their thoughts, words, & behavior?
    • What percentage of how they felt actually had anything to do with you personally?
    • Are any of these feelings a mirror for how YOU were feeling/acting at the time?
  4. Next, consider your role in the experience & ask yourself the following questions:
    • Is there anything you could’ve done differently to prevent the situation at hand?
    • What needs to happen (within YOUR control) in order for you to forgive & move on?

Believe it or not, this level of curiosity about the situation at hand fosters ALL the qualities & characteristics of forgiveness! Not only that but it can be incredibly cleansing to learn, to grow, to evolve, & to find gratitude in anything painful that you’re experiencing.

Is it easy to go through this process every time?

No, sometimes it’s not but if you practice as much as you possibly can to find the benefit & the good in EVERY situation that comes your way, you’ll experience more forgiveness (and all the qualities that come with it!) in your life.

The consistent void that you create with a consistent practice of forgiveness will not only cleanse your life but it will also eventually lead to more prosperity & abundance! 🙂

Self-care 1What does self-care mean to you?

After empowering my clients to love them self, their health, and their life for almost 8 years now, I’ve found that self-care is different and unique for everyone.

Sadly, some consider self-care to be selfish or the lowest priority on the list amidst all the daily responsibilities, commitments, and distractions.

In fact, self-sacrificing tendencies happen to be the #1 ego fixation or compulsion that show up in my clients, resulting in self-inflicted bitterness, anger, and resentment that poisons their relationship to self and others.

Worse, I’ve worked with many who are so disconnected from themselves that they don’t even know what energizes, fuels, and inspires them (qualities that I consider to be prerequisites for what could be considered self-care!).

It’s not until these clients realize that self-care is actually the #1 thing they can do in they life that will not only bring them all that they desire, but it will also allow them to show up and contribute to the world from a place of fullness (vs. emptiness and drain).

Not only that but self-care is what allows us to take back control of our self, our health, and our life in a complete and whole  way! 🙂

5 Tips for Finding Balance in Chaotic Times

Balance Do you ever find it difficult to find balance during chaotic times?!

Keeping calm, cool, and collected in the face of chaos can certainly make life feel easier but let’s face it, this is sometimes easier said than done! 🙂

So do you do it? How can YOU find balance when overwhelmed by the chaos?

Well, first I think it’s important to question your definition of the word “balance”.

Does it mean staying calm, cool, and collected ALL the time?

If so, you might be setting yourself up for unnecessary overwhelm and disappointment.

WHY? Because your expectation to feel that way ALL the time means balance can never be achieved.

If that’s the case, than balance as a concept is really just a myth!

Instead, what if balance was more about your ability to know when you’re out of balance and your ability to quickly course-correct and get back on track?

How to Free Yourself From Fear

This month’s Self-Mastery Spotlight is on how to free yourself from fear!

In a previous article I spoke about The 7 Fears That Sabotage Your Life, which is great for helping you become aware of what holds you back!

That being said, knowing the fears that hold you back is NOT the same as knowing how to FREE yourself from those fears, which is why I put together today’s video blog!

The 7 Fears That Sabotage Your Life

Do YOU ever struggle with panic or fear?

I’m not talking about the kind of fear that kicks in when your life is in danger but rather, the kind of fear that comes from your thoughts, your beliefs, and the conditioning you’ve received over the years?

I know I have!

PANICSadly, I was oblivious to this fact for the first 35 years of life and I unintentionally let fear drive many of actions, words, and thoughts. In fact, I believe it played a part in the chronic pain I experienced for well over 10 years!

Several years ago, as part of my Journey accreditation program,  I attended a week-long, silent, healing retreat to identify and release the ego fixations that held me back. It was there that I clearly realized for the first time ever that my biggest ego fixation was fear around safety and security.

Once I learned this about myself, it WOKE me up!

For the first time, I saw clearly how this pattern had been showing up and running (and ruining) most of my life in the form of anxiety, doubt, worry, and second-guessing of anything that might affect my safety and security.

This revelation was enlightening AND at the same time, terrifying.

Why? Because I realized in that moment that it was MY dis-empowering thoughts, beliefs, and conditioning that had been dictating my emotional reactions (AND my reality) for so long!

In a flash I realized I could no longer play the victim card and blame others for my unhappiness. In order to transform that fear, I had to take control of my life and make a commitment to my personal growth and evolution.

As a result of that commitment, I’ve learned a lot about fear!

Since that unconscious time in my life, I’ve learned the various types of fear AND I’ve learned how to to embrace, learn from, and be-friend my own fears.  🙂

And although I still have moments where anxiety, doubt, worry, and second-guessing come up, I can now more easily recognize & release those fears. I’ve also become more skilled and adept at transforming fear into an empowering reaction and feelings of trust, faith, courage, and security.

So what are the fears that hold YOU back? 🙂

One of my favorite authors, Napoleon Hill, believed that the 7 basic fears in life are as follows:

  1. Fear of poverty
  2. Fear of criticism (or rejection)
  3. Fear of ill health
  4. Fear of loss of love (or abandonment)
  5. Fear of the loss of liberty (or freedom)
  6. Fear of old age
  7. Fear of death

So how can awareness of these fears be of benefit to YOU personally?

Well, let’s find out!

For each of the above fears, do the following:

  1. Write down all the life scenarios where this fear played itself out for you.
  2. Review the scenarios and answer the following question… what has this fear COST you?
  3. Review the scenarios again and answer the following question… what are the benefits you’ll receive if you could release your attachment to this fear?

My guess is that your answers to the above questions will enlighten you! Not only that but they’ll provide you with awareness of what you want AND don’t want so that you have a clearer vision of where you’re going and what’s stopping you.

So, whenever these fears arise going forward, simply put in place the following:

  1. Identify what’s driving the fear.
  2. Briefly feel & experience the fear fully.
  3. Re-direct & focus your attention on the benefits of what you REALLY desire.
  4. Take ONE small action or step toward what you REALLY desire until it shifts your energy & lifts your spirits.

With enough practice and persistence, it will become easier over time to release the fear itself and re-focus your attention to what you REALLY desire! It could even help you handle other dis-empowering emotions with more ease and grace. 🙂

If you’ve been moving through life in a way that limited, drains your energy & requires FAR too much effort, you’re burned out & out of balance.

The Problem

The root cause of why many of us in this fast-paced busy world that we live in are struggling is due to unconscious programming & conditioning (i.e. our thoughts, feelings, emotions, beliefs, & ego patterns) that we’ve learned from our family, friends, & society from the moment we were born until now!

And here’s the deal, most of us aren’t even aware that our conditioning drives us so heavily but it does.

If it’s unconscious that means we don’t know about it! You can’t fix a problem if you don’t know about it, right?

That’s why unconscious programming & conditioning leads to SELF-SABOTAGE in the form of burnout.

And here’s the deal, ALL of us are affected by this!

For example, in this fast-paced, success-driven world that we live in most of us have learned & been conditioned to operate heavily in our masculine energy (strong, independent, logical, analytical, competitive, task-oriented, goal-oriented, action-oriented, etc…).

As a result, a large majority of both men & women have lost their connection to their innate feminine power (intuition, creativity, being in the flow, manifestation, intention, etc…) that allows us to create change in our life with far greater ease & grace. Sadly, men & women have become “over-masculinized” through cultural & social conditioning that has us feeling more pressured than ever before & scrambling to control everything that happens in our life!

Does this give you a better idea of WHY burnout & self-sabotage is happening in your life? Probably.

In addition to this, men & women are also taking on more responsibility than ever before.

Historically speaking & even still today, women have a greater responsibility than men for care-taking on the home front. If you add working 30-50 hours a week on top of all this, it plays a large role in why over 75% of women in the workforce are dealing with stress (with only 45% actually doing something to resolve it!) & feeling so burned out, stressed & exhausted! There’s simply no time at the end of each day to fill up their energy tanks.

Men are also taking on more responsibility now at home than ever before, while at the same time feeling extreme pressure to continue working “hard” so they can provide for themselves & their families! This added pressure makes it difficult for men to focus on their goals & less likely for them to have the time they need to refuel & recharge their own energy, focus, & attention so they can be the hero they desire to be.

Can you see what I mean about what the unconscious conditioning & saboteurs is costing us?? Hopefully.

And on top of all this, if you add into the mix any limiting beliefs, unhealthy behaviors, toxic thoughts, or emotional triggers that you’ve been conditioned with over the years it’s easy to see how we unconsciously limit our greatness!

Creating Harmony in Relationships

What You SowWouldn’t it be great & so much EASIER if we could all just get along without even trying? 🙂

And why does it require SO much effort to work through conflict & maintain harmony?

I’ve had many relationships in my life with friends, family, & significant others and I can’t think of a single one when conflict didn’t arise at some point in the relationship.

You see, we’re ALL human.  

Misunderstandings happen. Things are misinterpreted. People get triggered & lash out. Needs go unidentified & unmet. Promises get broken. Feelings get hurt.

Even though we all make mistakes & are doing the best we can in any given moment, the sad reality is that most of what we’ve been taught about how to get along we learned from watching others! 

Think about it… it’s not like this was taught as an on-going class in school or anything.

AND, without appropriate mentors to model & guide ourselves after, we’ve mostly just learned how to react unconsciously to conflict, leading to animal-like behavior & a variety of well-learned bad habits.

According to David B. Wolfe, the author of Relationships That Work, this kind of modeling can result in any number of the following bad habits & roadblocks to creating harmony:  

  • advising
  • judging
  • moralizing
  • giving solutions
  • warning
  • threatening
  • interrogating
  • probing
  • preaching
  • teaching
  • lecturing
  • ordering
  • directing
  • scolding
  • diverting
  • distracting
  • analyzing
  • interpreting
  • criticizing
  • name-calling
  • labeling
  • sympathizing
  • reassuring
  • praising

How many of these do YOU regularly engage in OR receive these from others?  

I will admit there are times that I still have a hard time giving AND receiving some of these especially when I’m emotionally triggered, physically drained, or under attack.

That being said, I’ve learned a few things along the way to avoid engaging in these behaviors that I think will help YOU avoid doing the same so that you can get along better with others. 🙂

In part, I believe a very important aspect of creating harmony in relationship lies in understanding the 3 modes of expression, which are as follows & embody the following qualities:

Passivity:

  • scared
  • insecure
  • nervous
  • inhibited
  • anxious
  • self-deprecating
  • weak
  • fragile
  • indecisive

Assertiveness:

  • bold
  • confident
  • considerate
  • secure
  • empathetic
  • straightforard
  • honest
  • courageous
  • open-minded

Aggressiveness:

  • abrasive
  • cocky
  • harsh
  • bully
  • arrogant
  • insensitive
  • loud
  • obnoxious
  • selfish

In my opinion, it’s obvious that assertiveness is the healthiest form of expression to use when working to create harmony & resolve conflict with others.

Why? Because the emotional vibrational of this mode of expression literally feels the best when given AND received!

So here’s the million-dollar question you might be asking… “HOW do I become more assertive?!”

I believe that answer lies in the following daily spiritual rituals & practices that you can engage in anywhere, anytime, & even when conflict is NOT present to foster greater assertiveness & harmony in your relationships:

  1. Practice genuine, open-minded curiosity as much as possible & especially when triggered. Doing this with everyone you meet & engage with will recondition you to access this skill during difficult, triggered moments. Ask LOTS of open-ended questions to gain information so that you can increase your understanding of what’s driving the other person. This elicits a form of listening that has the desire to understand driving it vs. the desire to fix a problem or defend one’s stance & will deepen your connection & interactions with others deeply! Last but not least, do this BEFORE you offer up an explanation of your stance so that the other person feels deeply heard & understood, resulting in a diffusion of whatever reaction they might’ve been having and making them more open to hearing your perspective.
  2. Understand & clarify your triggered emotional responses as they arise. Understanding what you do & do NOT want is a critical component to arrive at a WIN-WIN solution, for expressing your truth, & for asking for what you need. To do this, try the following non-violent communication technique when you experience any dis-empowering response (in yourself or others):
    • Step back in a non-biased way & observe the situation at hand.
    • Identify clearly any dis-empowering emotions being felt (you might have to use #1 to find out!).
    • Identify clearly what needs are not being met that would cause that type of emotional response (for example, if you’re angry because your spouse didn’t help out around the house like they said they would, the need that went unfulfilled might be a need for trust & integrity).
    • Fulfill the need by filling it yourself (when applicable) or making a request of others by explaining your emotion, what it is you REALLY want, & asking if they would be willing to help fulfill that need.
  3. Treat others the way you wish to be treated. What you give, you get. What you send out, comes back. What you sow, you reap. What you see in others, exists in you. If you want harmony in relationships, YOU have to show up & treat others the way you want to be treated! To identify what this looks like for YOU, do the following:
    • Make a list of all the things that trigger you in your interactions with others.
    • For each item on the list, identify how you’d rather be treated instead.
    • Make a commitment to learn how to show up the way you want to be treated.
  4. Speak your truth in a way that honors all involved. Being authentic, honest, genuine & real is important but not at the cost of someone else’s feelings. When you must be honest with someone else about how you feel, do it a compassionate, kind way.
  5. Work toward a WIN-WIN resolution whenever you can. Competition & trying to win over another creates an adversarial energy that rarely ends in a fulfilling resolution. Not to mention that getting everyone’s needs met always feels better in the end. 🙂
  6. Practice, practice, practice being assertive & learn from your mistakes. Align yourself to the qualities of assertiveness as much as possible & remember that getting really good at something takes time. You will stumble & bumble often in the beginning! Learn from your mistakes. Re-affirm your intentions to be better next time & to become competent in whatever you’re trying to become. With enough practice, you’ll eventually become a master at being assertive!

So there you have it! These are just a few personal insights on how to have harmony in relationships. 🙂

And please remember that we are all human. If someone does not treat you with the same level of respect as you desire, realize that any of the following might be the reason why:

  • They don’t know what they need or how to ask for it.
  • They don’t know how to be assertive.
  • They are emotionally, physically, or mentally drained & unable to draw upon their assertive resources.
  • There is something in you that’s magnetizing this experience into your reality so that you can learn from it.

At the end of the day, we are ALL doing the best we can in any given moment. Knowing that you’ve made mistakes too, practice forgiveness, compassion & understanding as much as you possibly can.

You’ll have much great harmony & be much happier as a result! 🙂
