How to Know When It’s Time for a Self-Care Tune-Up

Do you struggle often with physical pain? Mental worries, stress, or strife? Emotional unhappiness & discontent? 

Its-Tune-Up-TimeAs you probably already know, the foundation of a good life is good health.

While the concept of self-care can be applied to all areas of your life – career, spiritual well-being, relationships, and so on – what supports each of these areas is the care you provide for the amazing physical body & vehicle that takes you through life.

So how do you know when it’s time for a self-care tune-up?

First of all, let me just say that I believe deeply our body is a barometer for our soul.

Did you know emotional issues that go unaddressed over time can lead to physical issues and even chronic disease in the body?

For example, I’ve suffered on and off throughout my life with chronic low back pain.

According to Louise Hay, the author of You Can Heal Your Life, low back pain is associated with not feeling financially supported. AND, interestingly enough most of my childhood was spent without running water or electricity. I learned at an early age what it felt like to not feel financially supported and even today, if money is becomes “tight”, my low back flares up!

Can you see now how the health of our physical body can actually be a barometer for our emotional and mental state?

Conversely, if you’re experiencing chronic shame, guilt, depression, anger, or emotional discontent MORE than you are not (i.e. 50% or more of the time), it could be an indicator that something’s amiss and needs to be addressed in your life!

To identify if your body is in need of a tune-up, here are a few simple questions you can ask yourself which will help you take stock of your health and what you’re in need of:

  1. Is there a health-related issue that you’re concerned about?
  2. Is there something about your physical appearance that you feel self-conscious about?
  3. Are you experiencing chronic emotional unhappiness (i.e. more than 50% of the time)?
  4. Do you feel regularly feel foggy, exhausted, & unable to focus or concentrate?
  5. Are you in conflict regularly with others?
  6. Are you having a hard time staying positive & upbeat?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s time for a self-care tune-up! 🙂

So now that you’ve identified if it’s time for a tune-up, here are just a few tips that you can follow for tuning up your life:

  1. Take Charge of Your Health: The only person that can change how you feel is YOU & that starts with taking responsibility for the choices that will positively impact your health.
  2. Listen to Your Body: Pay attention & heed any physical or emotional warnings that your physical or emotional body is giving you. Go inward & reflect on what you really need. Ignoring what’s wrong will only make it worse!
  3. Choose Health Partners To Support You: Find a health practitioner, massage therapist, nutritionist, counselor, coach, or someone who specializes in what you’re struggling with. It’s important to find & build the right support team to help you transform!
  4. Find the Right Emotional Support: Reach out to trusted friends & loved ones for love & support. It’s important not to isolate & do things on your own!
  5. Get Plenty of Downtime & Rest: Make sure that you’re getting plenty of rest each night AND that you’re taking regular & consistent time in your schedule for downtime and time away from your everyday stressors. As you know, all work & no play makes Jack & Jill a dull boy or girl!
  6. Eat Right & Exercise: Make sure that you are nourishing your body with high quality, healthy food & regular exercise. Your body needs fuel to keep your life force energy & fire stoked!
  7. Foster Your Creativity: Artistic & creative pursuits are a great way to foster deeper self-expression & can be incredibly healing!
  8. Make Time for Fun: Engage in hobbies & activities just for fun. In order to live a fulfilling life, fun needs to be a priority!

These are just a few ideas to get you started but the most important one is #1!

If you aren’t willing to take charge of your health and do what it takes to fine-tune your body, mind, & spirit, it’s likely nothing will change.

And imagine… if nothing changes, what will your life be like a year from now? Five years from now? Ten years from now? Probably not great.

So take back control of your life and make yourself a priority once again! You’re worth it. 🙂

Why Self-Care is Better for You Than Self-Discipline

Have you ever struggled with the self-discipline it takes to create the happiness and success you desire?

Why is that?

I have a theory about why self-discipline is so challenging and it’s related to the conditioning and beliefs we’ve developed as a culture around what the word “self-discipline” actually means.

Consider for a moment the following definition of the word “self-discipline”:

self-discipline – n. discipline and training of oneself, usually for improvement

Typically, the words “discipline” and “training” tend to be more masculine in nature, which means any action taken is going to require focus, attention, effort and maybe even some good old “hard work”. For some, it may also mean that it will feel more like something that “has” to be done (i.e. obligation) vs. something that “wants” to be done (i.e. desire).

When trying to create change in your life, do these qualities sound like a “joyful or fun” experience to you?

From a mindset perspective, not really.

So why is self-care better for you than self-discipline…?

In a nutshell, here’s why. First, consider now the definition of the word “self-care”:

self-care – n. care of the self without medical or other professional consultation

Don’t you agree that “care of the self” tends to sound more loving and nurturing in nature?

Of course it does!

And although there may still be self-discipline and effort involved in learning how to “care for yourself” on your own, consider how empowering it is to overcome obstacles that hold you back without the help from outside sources! Not only that, but “self-care” comes from a place of desire vs. obligation, which means the energy that drives your actions will be much more feminine in nature (i.e. loving, gentle, nurturing, and desiring).

So when it comes time to create change in your life would you rather create from a place of self-discipline or self-care? 🙂

For me, I’ve found that choosing “self-care” rituals to create what I desire in life feels like less effort, is far more enjoyable, and way more effective than creating actions based on “self-discipline”.

That being said, knowing the fears that hold you back is NOT the same as knowing how to FREE yourself from those fears, which is why I put together today’s video blog!

Wouldn’t it be great if you had a method you could use to not only FREE yourself of FEAR but of ANY dis-empowering emotion that might arise?

Wouldn’t this make YOUR life easier?!! Of course it would.

As many of you know, I’m an avid fan and deep seeker of personal growth and I’ve learned a few tricks over the years for reconditioning fear into freedom.

The 7 Fears That Sabotage Your Life

Do YOU ever struggle with panic or fear?

I’m not talking about the kind of fear that kicks in when your life is in danger but rather, the kind of fear that comes from your thoughts, your beliefs, and the conditioning you’ve received over the years?

I know I have!

PANICSadly, I was oblivious to this fact for the first 35 years of life and I unintentionally let fear drive many of actions, words, and thoughts. In fact, I believe it played a part in the chronic pain I experienced for well over 10 years!

Several years ago, as part of my Journey accreditation program,  I attended a week-long, silent, healing retreat to identify and release the ego fixations that held me back. It was there that I clearly realized for the first time ever that my biggest ego fixation was fear around safety and security.

Once I learned this about myself, it WOKE me up!

For the first time, I saw clearly how this pattern had been showing up and running (and ruining) most of my life in the form of anxiety, doubt, worry, and second-guessing of anything that might affect my safety and security.

This revelation was enlightening AND at the same time, terrifying.

Why? Because I realized in that moment that it was MY dis-empowering thoughts, beliefs, and conditioning that had been dictating my emotional reactions (AND my reality) for so long!

In a flash I realized I could no longer play the victim card and blame others for my unhappiness. In order to transform that fear, I had to take control of my life and make a commitment to my personal growth and evolution.

As a result of that commitment, I’ve learned a lot about fear!

Since that unconscious time in my life, I’ve learned the various types of fear AND I’ve learned how to to embrace, learn from, and be-friend my own fears.  🙂

And although I still have moments where anxiety, doubt, worry, and second-guessing come up, I can now more easily recognize & release those fears. I’ve also become more skilled and adept at transforming fear into an empowering reaction and feelings of trust, faith, courage, and security.

So what are the fears that hold YOU back? 🙂

One of my favorite authors, Napoleon Hill, believed that the 7 basic fears in life are as follows:

  1. Fear of poverty
  2. Fear of criticism (or rejection)
  3. Fear of ill health
  4. Fear of loss of love (or abandonment)
  5. Fear of the loss of liberty (or freedom)
  6. Fear of old age
  7. Fear of death

So how can awareness of these fears be of benefit to YOU personally?

Well, let’s find out!

For each of the above fears, do the following:

  1. Write down all the life scenarios where this fear played itself out for you.
  2. Review the scenarios and answer the following question… what has this fear COST you?
  3. Review the scenarios again and answer the following question… what are the benefits you’ll receive if you could release your attachment to this fear?

My guess is that your answers to the above questions will enlighten you! Not only that but they’ll provide you with awareness of what you want AND don’t want so that you have a clearer vision of where you’re going and what’s stopping you.

So, whenever these fears arise going forward, simply put in place the following:

  1. Identify what’s driving the fear.
  2. Briefly feel & experience the fear fully.
  3. Re-direct & focus your attention on the benefits of what you REALLY desire.
  4. Take ONE small action or step toward what you REALLY desire until it shifts your energy & lifts your spirits.

With enough practice and persistence, it will become easier over time to release the fear itself and re-focus your attention to what you REALLY desire! It could even help you handle other dis-empowering emotions with more ease and grace. 🙂

5 Simple Ways to Create a Positive Mental Attitude

nullThis month’s Self-Mastery Spotlight will cover 5 simple ways for YOU to create a positive mental attitude!

Let’s face it. If you’re a human with a brain and the capacity to think, you’ve  suffered from a negative mental attitude at some point in time. :)The good news is that you’re not alone!

Even better news is that there are literally 100’s of ways to transform that negativity into a positive mental attitude .

To give you a few ideas I’d like to share the 5 simple steps that I take when I’m feeling negative to create a positive mental attitude:

  1. Be the change you wish to see in the world. This is a great quote by Mahatma Gandhi and one of the most important lessons you’ll learn in life. When you focus on keeping your words, thoughts, & actions as positive & uplifting as possible (even when you DON’T feel good!) you’ll feel better soon AND good things will be more likely to happen. Of course, there will be days when you lack the resources to maintain this kind of positivity (see #5) so let go of expectations of perfection AND learn from your mistakes. The good news is that the more often you maintain integrity with what you really desire, the easier it will become AND the more positive and happy you will feel!
  2. Create affirmations that represent the change you wish to be. Much of what limits us stems from the thoughts that we think. When you’re feeling upset or negative about life, take a moment to identify what the feelings and beliefs are that are driving your discontent. From there, identify what you REALLY want and write a positively-stated affirmation that represents what you desire. Review and practice alignment to this new affirmation daily until you start to feel more proficient in your efforts.
  3. Do something that brings you JOY. To shift your focus of attention on what’s NOT working onto what will work better, sometimes you need to have an “interrupt”. Interrupting your focus of attention to some more positive in nature will shift your energy in a more positive direction and what better way than to engage in an activity that brings you JOY?! 🙂 You’ll feel better AND you’ll be able to think more clearly & work through whatever was bothering you to begin with.
  4. Approach life with an attitude of open-mindedness, curiosity & discovery. When I’m feeling upset or negative about something it’s usually because my attention has become fixated and closed off to what’s possible. I believe this greatly limits our capacity to feel good about ourselves and life so something that can be done to counteract this limitation is to approach every interaction and experience with as much curiosity and discovery as possible. You can do this by asking lots of open-ended, curiosity-based questions to help you gain greater clarity and understanding as to why things are the way they are AND it will also take you out of resistance and limitation and into open-mindedness and possibility (the foundation of a positive mental attitude!).
  5. Maintain your energy stores with regular, consistent self care. Believe it or not, another huge reason for a negative mental attitude is physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion. If you’re not taking care of yourself in all of these areas, your capacity to be patient, loving, kind, gentle, and compassionate goes out the door! To feel better and to interact with others from a place of fullness (vs. lack, obligation, or drain), you must make taking care of yourself an absolute priority. When you’re feeling negative and unhappy, take a break to engage in some form of self-care (i.e. exercise, down time, free flow time, activities that bring you joy, massage, time with a loving friend, etc…).

So there you have it! These are just a few ways that YOU can create a positive mental attitude. The next time you feel negative, pick one of the suggestions above and give it a shot. 🙂

AND, remember that everyone’s different so if the first one doesn’t work for you, keep trying something new until you find the one that shifts things for YOU.

How to Create a “Health” Mindset

Have you ever wondered how to go about create a “health” mindset in your life?

For close to 10 years I suffered deeply from major low back pain, trying one thing after another to “fix the problem”.

In fact, I thought I was doing everything I could to address the physical symptoms I was experiencing – pain medication, chiropractic care, acupuncture, & massage therapy just to name a few.

NONE of it made a difference.
In fact, if anything… it got worse!

WHY? Well, I believe it was because my focus of attention was on the following:

  1. fixing the problem vs. seeking a solution
  2. looking for someone who could fix me vs. fixing myself (i.e. taking ownership of & personal responsibility for my physical, mental, & emotional health)
  3. addressing symptoms vs. the root cause of the physical pain  
The truth is that back then I felt hopeless, punished & broken. The more hopeless, punished & broken I felt, the worse I felt! 🙁

Ultimately, this is what led to me having a “sickness” mindset that greatly exacerbated my physical health!

After MANY years of trying to fix the problem, looking for someone to fix me, & trying to address the symptoms I finally realized that my perspective & focus of attention was fixated on what I did NOT want.

It was then that I decided to start focusing on the solution, fixing myself, addressing the root cause of the problem & moving toward what I really wanted.

Upon doing this, I came up with some realizations (from this more open-minded, flexible place) that would lead me to what I really desired & here’s what I realized:

  • Instead of focusing on managing & eliminating pain, I realized I could focus on creating strength, flexibility & vitality in my body, mind, & spirit.
  • Instead of viewing this as a problem, I realized I could look at it as an opportunity to learn how to take care of & heal myself from the inside out.
  • Instead of feeling resentment over feeling punished, I realized I could feel gratitude for the health I did have & the power to change what wasn’t working.
  • Instead of feeling helpless & looking outside myself to be “fixed”, I realized I could commit to taking back control of my health.

AND, when I actually started to focus more often on all of the above, I felt better!

Additionally, this shift toward a more positive “health” mindset that allowed me to start taking positive steps in the right direction & also led to:

  • my mindset became more open-minded & flexible
  • my actions shifted in a positive direction
  • greater self-awareness
  • increased strength, flexibility, & vitality
  • higher wisdom & non-attachment
  • gratitude, joy, & happiness
  • MORE of what I really wanted!

And most importantly, a significant reduction of pain (mental, emotional AND physical!).

So… my challenge to YOU, Contact First Name, is to identify ONE aspect of your physical health or appearance that you would like to shift your perspective on.

Then, do the following exercise to shift your perspective & give you something to practice:

  1. Make a list of all the current beliefs (healthy or unhealthy!) you have about this aspect of your physical health.
  2. For any belief that is unhealthy or dis-empowering in any way, identify what you really desire in that area.
  3. Write a present-tense affirmation that represents the essence of that desire. For example: “My spine is crooked & degenerated” would become “I am creating a healthy, strong, flexible, & supple spine!”.
  4. For any belief that is healthy or empowering, write down the essence of that belief as a present-tense affirmation.
  5. Print this list & read each affirmation daily.  

As you review this list daily, over time you will start to experience a shift in your mindset. 

AND, because your focus of attention is on what you really want more often, you will likely find yourself taking small steps along the way that will lead you back to the sound physical health that you really desire. 🙂
